Triangle Biz Journal Story: “WUNC Searches for Stronger Voice Amid Stingy Financials”

This April 17, 2009 story from the Triangle Business Journal chronicles the challenges faced by WUNC in a tough economy. Key paragraph: “Since its 2005 fiscal year, when the station recorded an income gain of $1.4 million, WUNC has lost money annually, topping out at a loss of $936,000 in 2008.” The station has an annual budget of $7.8 million. The article goes on to note that the station’s cash reserves are at approxiamtely $700,000, down from $3.8 million in 2006. The story also notes the station’s ongoing search for an underwriter for Dick Gordon’s nationally-syndicated talk program The Story, which costs an estimated $900,000 per year to produce.
